King Bhumibol is Dead
King Bhumibol passed away at Siriraj Hospital at 3.52pm on Thursday-Oct 13, 2016. Thailand is crying for their beloved “God-Like” King. The world’s longest-reigning monarch, has died after 70 years as head of state at age 88, 1927 – 2016. King Bhumibol is Dead!
King Bhumibol was born at the Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the United States, on 5 December 1927. He is also known as Rama IX. He is the ninth monarch of the Chakri Dynasty.
Bhumibol ascended the throne following the death by gunshot wound of his brother, King Ananda Mahidol, on 9 June 1946. He is the world’s longest serving current head of state and the longest reigning monarch in Thai history, serving for 69 years, 178 days. Bhumibol succeeded his brother, but returned to Switzerland before the end of the 100-days mourning period.
While finishing his degree in Switzerland, Bhumibol visited Paris frequently. In Paris he met Mom Rajawongse Sirikit Kitiyakara, daughter of the Thai ambassador to France.
On 4 October 1948, he had a car accident, collided with the rear of a truck on a road near Lausanne, Switzerland. He injured his back and lost the sight of his right eye and has worn a prosthetic since.
Bhumibol married Sirikit on 28 April 1950, just a week before his coronation.Bhumibol was crowned King of Thailand on 5 May 1950 at the Royal Palace in Bangkok.
